Welcome to Spicyomelet.com. Currently this is my server that I own with a domain attached to it - like toliet paper to the shoe. Eventually, hopefully by the end of this summer, I will have a network that will be able to host email and host various websites. Until then, or when Comcast kicks me off, read my blog.

Summer Vacation!!

Uncategorized No Comments »

Although I’m out of school right now, I need a vacation. I work, have football “practice”, and have several odd jobs that keep me occupied. I’m gonna break free from all of this for some time and when I get back, I’ll have pictures to back me up.
Please check out my gallery and comment on pictures that you like, or the one’s you don’t nessesarily like. I’ve worked pretty hard on it and will continue to dump my camera up on there.

See you in a while - check back often. If I have access to the Internet, I will post!

Photo Gallery is ONLINE

So I’ve got the photo bug. I also feel the need to share what I’ve seen through my viewfinder with others. So I put up on online photo gallery which you can access by clicking “Photo Gallery” at the top or by going to http://spicyomelet.com/gallery. I’ve enabled it to draw a watermark on the photos because I really want to own them. If you want a picture send a request to kevin@spicyomelet.com - otherwise deal with the watermark.

My dad has a bunch of lenses that he recieved from work that will work with the body so I hope to do some neat stuff. The picture is my favorite of the 300 pics I shot today. I hope you enjoy the works I will put up.

The inner geekness

Uncategorized No Comments »

Today was a fun day, I had a friend from school over and we hacked away at our Linux distros a bit and talked computer talk. I set him up with his own blog josh.spicyomelet.com. He is currently my first web-hosting client.

I now offer the following features on my web server:

  • FTP access
  • PHP5 and mySQL
  • 1 GB of storage
  • Nightly backups

I offer this package for $10 a month. If you want your own domain (www.what-u-want.com) I am able to set that up for you. The company I deal with is 1&1 and they charge about $7 a year for a domain. It will be registered under my name so I can just pay for everyone’s bill at one time.

I will draw up a Terms of Service and post it as soon as possible.

A flop?

Ok,
I jumped the gun and installed openSUSE 11.0 yesterday. It took forever to download because everyone else in the world was downloading it around the same time.

I tried installing it on my laptop, which it did. I went to go use it - that’s where it gets ugly. I start out on KDE4 - the newest version of the K desktop environment. It keeps crashing. At this point I realize that KDE4 is a brand new, probably not all that stable enviroment - so I switch to KDE3.

Upon doing so, I lose all 3D desktop effects (my favorite part), and things just don’t seem to work they way they should.

After that, I decide to switch back to Ubuntu. That’s where I stand right now. I think at the hackfest, I will try and install it on my 4gig flash drive and run it from there. I have grown use to Ubuntu, and it does everything I need it to do correctly as of right now. So…..

Happy Friday,
Kevin

openSUSE 11.0

After all this time using Ubuntu linux, I think I may switch over to openSUSE 11.0 just for fun. I know I’ve grown use to the layout of Ubuntu, but it really isn’t that much fun anymore since I don’t have to figure anything out anymore.

I’ve been working for school this summer doing various jobs - although the main project is renovating the library. So far I’ve moved 4500 books, 7 huge shelves, 1 giant librarians desk (nailed to the ground), and a countless number of tables and chairs. I will be painting sometime in the near future (today) and then moving everything back in. Apparently the library will be brown. I don’t know how ’twill look, I just do it.

I am hopefully going to donate a firewall to school to help lock down the network a bit. It is too open for things to happen. Really, we should just block everything but port 80, but it’s not my call. I need to find an old machine sometime soon so I can build them one. I got a few extra NICs laying around so I just need to put the pieces together.

Football is going good. I am very optimistic for this year - and so far everyone on the team is getting along. It’s only week 2, but I’m getting some good vibes.

I think I want to redesign the site, but I’m not sure… I want to hand-code something…

Well, take care,

Kevin

A lot has happened since the last post…

Since my last post, I’ve been a pretty busy guy. I’ve been working at my school doing a little demo so they can renovate the library/media center this summer.

Football practice too has begun. I remain optimistic for this year being under a new head coach and all. We as a team are just gonna have to work hard.

I also replaced smoothwall with Endian’s open source firewall called EFW. It seems more put together - although I think they disabled some featured to encourage the purchase of their commercial products, but I get what I need out of it. The web-interface is well done and the features out of the box are stable and useful. It takes a bit of getting used to, but after that you can do anything. I think you can visit the site at http://www.endian.com/en/community/.

There will be a Hackfest on June 21 from 11am to 5pm at ThinkTank. My Linux Users Group is sponsoring the “hack” fest / Launch Party for SUSE 11.

I know, a lot to take in, good luck!

Change is in the air…

Ok, for some reason, I cannot get my orange interface to work… so I had to forward my webserver on the green zone. I need to consult someone who really knows their stuff…

Sorry for the downtime, I’ve been working on this network configuration for a while, but it seems to have failed, or I have a bad network card…. one of the two.

So I need to get some rest for tomorrow…
