Yes, I know it seems impossible, but I am in love with Google. After a recent tour of the Chicago location, I now better understand the vision of the company and see that some of it’s tools actually are very useful.
From day one, I’ve used Google to search what ever I needed to find. It does it very well. Several years passed from the day I first typed in google.com into the address bar, and found that they had an awesome email client – google mail or gmail. At that time they gave users about 4 gigs of space. Now today they are giving about 6 and 1/2 gigs of space to store emails. So far, I have 817 emails that take up 34mb of space – not even 1% of the space they have given me for free.
Other tools that I am quite fond of – Google Calendar – it’s nice to keep track of all the events in my life. The one downside I’m hoping Google will engineer is the ability to sync with a PDA or smartphone device.
Google Docs is pretty cool – it’s barebones, yet it offers some cool collaboration features that make it ideal. The next time I need to type something up, I’ll seriously think about using Google Docs.
Back to the tour… It was amazing. Every workspace is close to food – free food. The cafeteria has great food – the chef was serving ribs when I went to the tour.
The building was very lively, colorful, and surprisingly comfortable. There was a game room complete with a ping-pong table, Xbox 360, etc… there was an area where they had movies playing and bean-bag chairs set up for the engineers to sit back, relax, and work.
It was a very pleasant experience… maybe one day, I’ll work at a place like that…
